Clive Owen in chase -The International

Orphan's Benefit

download Fire in the Sky dvd

The movie opens with this intense, brooding Clive Owen stare…

Can’t stop wondering what the hell he’s staring at, other than a curious movie theatre audience…which he probably can’t see…

So, one would think this is the start of a gunfight bang bang shoot-em-up action sequence. But, nope…oh right, that’s Owen’s other Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical dvd Giù la testa download movie.

Still, The International is plenty suspenseful from the start with that stare from main character, Louis Salinger (Owen) and an abundance of conspiracy theories of the who’s-in-on-it-who’s not ilk but a little deeper

Every character bounces off of Salinger’s frustration with “the system”, or a system that seems to be cheating someone out of something that isn’t exactly made clear first but has big-picture consequences over immediate ones.

No sudden global threat, terrorist murder scheme or evil-doer with pet in hand and scar or eye-patch making demands. Definitely more drama than action here, which makes this a suspenseful romp worthy of the “thriller” classification it’s been getting.

Interpol agent Salinger somehow teams up with Manhattan District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) to take down the large international bank that holds the key to arms dealings with small warring nations. The big money given to weapons for small military coups in weak government countries thing is a well-documented assumption among conspiracy theorists, historians, politicians, etc often proven correct.

10,000 BC movie download

Cabin Boy release

The main international dilemma can be assumed as the old “big power of few effects the well-being of the small many”, especially since this big international power (international bank, IBBC) eliminates any witness or person getting too close to their dealings. Pretty straight-forward but some interesting twists still thrown in, so don’t give up yet! (The other international dilemma being how in the world Salinger affords these cross-continent trips…hmm.)

The other main character, Whitman (Naomi Watts), fills the emotional female role that explores more of Salinger’s background and reveals some of it to us. (The man is used to getting bounced around and silenced by higher-ups and she forces about why that is, because you know, he’s all mysterious and fed up.) This may explain her near-absence throughout the most climactic last half-hour or so.

This is Owen’s show. And he plays the paranoia role well enough that you start to wonder if it’s the movie or are you just paranoid.

But the movie itself feels slow with much discussion over politics taking the place of action that you’d expect from a movie pushed back to February from August just to ADD more action. It still feels more drama than action-thriller as it’s marketed.

Primary Colors divx

All the deep complexities of the story can’t completely fit in while attempting to add action. The trailer does an excellent job of sucking you in. Then, you realize how so close you are to a Ronin-like car chase through crowded foreign streets but then end Salinger continues on foot and just is not that fast. Another failed circumstance is how the IBBC’s top executioner is so easily traced due to VERY unique characteristics, this cracks the story open early and drags on. The one great gun-blazing out of nowhere scene does help; as it takes place in a very public NYC area without much warning at all (check the trailer again). This sequence brings together rivals as allies momentarily as the suspense keeps you guessing as to who is on who’s side. By its end, it is clear but the movie is far from over.

Overall, the movie showcases some beautiful scenery on location in Istanbul (historic sites), Milan (rooftop views of crowded streets), NYC (the default American location) and others. All with crowded streets and the camera dipping, panning, swooping in and out of weaving traffic, narrow winding roads and excellent architectural gems.

So, come for the suspense, stay for the (yes THE ONE) action sequence and get caught up in the story. Owen nails his character but Watts is replaceable in her small role. But she provides the tears (and an always good American “accent”) that this female-less movie may have felt it needed. Oh oh, one quick spoiler you should stay for:

Naomi Watts gets hit by a car… unexpectedly…but so does Clive Owen!  Haha.

808s & Heartbreak REVIEW

February 11th, 2009

Kanye West INDIfferent

Kanye is in a dark place, emotional and feeling down. Could his music be going down too?

Thankfully, surprisingly even, no808’s & Heartbreak, West’s fourth studio album, not only pours his heart out, but his talent, his genius and his depth as an artist…after ignoring what I thought I knew about Kanye West hip-hop.

“An R&B album though? I know you love you some you and your style is high & mighty and all that, but clearly you’ve lost it.”

Then, Love Lockdown premiered and I was damn near convinced Kanye West is DONE. If he’s continuing down THIS road and style and etc, then he’s entered hip-hop irrelevance.

But, you have to look at the bigger picture; past cookie-cutter fit music categories with this album. I sat back, had it playing straight through with a focus on production over vocals. American Virgin film

Well, uh…I feel dirty saying it, but two weeks later I still haven’t put it down. Ah, I said it…there….disgusting! Kanye West is the one and only Kanye West this review and album is why:

Period. Just accept the fact and roll with it to make the trip more enjoyable. A Life Less Ordinary psp

Say You Will became a favorite track for the first few listens. The synth really carries the drama along with ‘Ye singing like he just got stood up on prom night. He puts it all out there with his hi-tech toys of the great ‘80’s like the synth and auto-tune breathing his life’s ills over Roland TR-808 drum patterns.

‘Ye is multi-platinum proven and floats way above the stereotypical hip-hop/rap, allowing him to break off into such an experimental approach to an album that’s all his own. Who else could you see pulling it off??

Back to music: West provides super 80’s feel through insecure-girl-problem tracks Love Lockdown,Paranoid (featuring Mr. Hudson) and the only-thing-I-could-really-call-it-is-ridiculously-original, with a smile, Robocop. He threw just about everything into Robocop; great harmony, synth, robot/machine sounds, classic Kanye-violins, feedback and way too many original sounds and levels to count. From the reluctance of Love Lockdown, to Paranoid where he jokingly references the insecure girlfriend and extreme insecurity when your mate turns Robocop checking on you.

The last two are fun, funny and reminiscent of the old West sense of humor.

Street lights and Welcome to Heartbreak (featuring new signee, Kid Cudi) serve as proof to the piano testament. Jeezy provides the only rapping on any track, though I’d consider Heartless spit by West.

Overall, 808’s is an experience through music that everyone needs to go through or might have already. The classic tools really express the majority of the emotion, piano especially, with West’s vocals there to translate. The irony is in how this album all about relationships actually redefines West as an artist in relation to hip-hop; the one relationship not discussed.

sounds a lot like Tony Starks skits, given the presence of him on the last track or so.  As the album comes to a close, I am left with sated ears and a sincere feeling of having the pleasure of listening to a thoughtful musical contribution when so often, a random spew of heavily sampled tracks with tasteless and talentless drum placement passes nowadays as quality instrumentals.  Dilla-istic, I’m sure he would be proud.

Some Thoughts About Genres and Subgenres

Once Upon a Time in America divx

Genres are a tricky thing. In this piece I will be mainly talking about industry-made genres. Now I am against a lot of industry shit. However, I don’t find a problem with putting genres on people if it’s done right. As an artist, the last thing you want to do is get placed in a box. That is why the word “labeling” makes me cringe, but I think it is useful to a degree. Most “neo-soul” heads will damn near dropkick you if you actually call them “neo-soul.” However, that label has created a brand that helped facilitate the success of an amazing movement that came out of this city in the beginning of this decade. My point is that the consumer has to have some idea of what he or she getting. There is a lot of music out here so, as an artist, you definitely want to draw your strongest demographics to you by letting them know what you sound like.

The Loves of Carmen dvdrip Pluto’s Surprise Package download This brings me to something I’ve been thinking about for a while: the difference between how hip-hop acts and rock acts are labeled. Hip-hop acts tend to get lumped together under the umbrella of “hip-hop” or “rap”. Sure, hip-hop/rap has little subgenres as the industry sees it: gangsta rap, conscious rap, etc. However, they are still promoted closely to each other on the radio, TV, magazines and the like, under the hip-hop-/rap umbrella. Rock is done a bit differently. Punk, Metal, Ska, Emo, Alternative, and other rock subgenres are looked upon as completely different animals from one another. If you look at it, these bands are hardly ever called “rock” because: a) that goes without saying, and b) your average metal band sounds nothing like your average emo band.

Lord of the Flies movie download This same principle should apply to hip-hop. There is no way in hell that Talib Kweli should have to be put in the same boat as Soulja Boy. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not for complete segregation of hip-hop. Collaboration is one of the most beautiful things about Hip-hop, and people should definitely still collaborate across all lines. All I’m saying is that Hip-Hop should be given the same respect as Rock when it comes to not lumping everyone together. I mean seriously, even Hip-Hop influenced singers are erroneously being called rappers. I was watching a youtube vid of the O’Reilly Factor(because I would never actually watch it on TV) where Akon was repeatedly referred to as a rapper. Also, remember when that whole Ron Artest fight broke out and they were saying how he had a “Rap Album?” The album in question turned out to be that of his female singing group.

Just listen to the way that exclusively Rock music fans talk about their musical preferences compared to those who listen exclusively to Hip-Hop and R&B. A person who likes Metallica would probably trash My Chemical Romance in a conversation about music. An average Slipknot fan would probably say “I hate [insert pop/rock band here: i.e. Simple Plan, Fall Out Boy, etc.], and I would never buy their album.” This is the standard behavior in Rock circles. Fans of Death Metal can trash fans of Emo or Pop/Rock and not belittle the whole Rock genre. In Hip-Hop, we feel the need sometimes to defend the whole genre in conversation. The truth is that a lot of this stuff has become impossible to defend.  I dare you to find the artistic merit of D4L’s “Laffy Taffy.” Your average hip-hop station today will be playing hip-hop and R&B across the spectrum, but they are now over-representing corny pop-rap. Can we get our own station on free radio for people who wanna hear some skillful emcees and soulful singers instead of nursery rhymers and 15-minute-fame-hearthrobs?

I don’t know, I’m just thinking out loud here, so I apologize if this whole thing seems a bit unfocused.  However, I always see hip-hop painted with one broad brush, and I don’t like it one bit.

Group Gets Caught Using Voter Suppression Technique Against Black Voters.

May 1st, 2008

Sherman’s Way move

by Brandon Tyler

Earlier this week, the story quietly broke online that many Black North Carolinians had received a peculiar phone call from an automated voice identifying himself as “Lamont Williams.” (you will find a link to the actual audio of this phone call at the bottom of this article). This “robocall” tells the voters on the other end of the phone that they will receive a “voter registration packet” in the mail, and that they need to fill it out and mail it back. There are a couple of problems here: 1. Who the heck is Lamont Williams? 2. Voter registration already ended for this primary, and these calls were reported by people who were already registered in the first place.

After about a week of investigation by independent journalists, the culprit of this devious tactic was revealed to be a political group called “Women’s Voices, Women Vote.” For those of you requiring establishment media confirmation of this story, the Associated Press released a story on the evening of April 30th stating that Women’s Voices Women Vote has apologized for the robocalls. The group’s president, Page Gardner said their “calls were a sincere attempt to encourage voter registration for those not registered for the general election. We apologize for any confusion our calls may have caused.” (Raleigh News & Observer)

.

Astérix chez les Bretons hd

Ripple Effect film

There are three problems with Ms. Gardner’s statement: 1. Again, who the heck is Lamont Williams and why hasn’t he come forward. The truth is that either this guy doesn’t exist or his voice was used in an unauthorized way. 2. They broke the law. Not only did they give false information, they failed to identify themselves as an organization or provide anyway to contact them. By the way, the calls were made from a blocked number. 3. Curious timing, don’t you think? Especially since leaders of this organization have considerable ties to the Clintons. (source: “Facing South”). Now, am I accusing the Clinton of being directly behind this? No. However, this organization intentionally tried to deceive people. Why isn’t this story being pick up by more than a handful of news outlets? The 24 hour cable news channels have been repeating, ad nauseum, the same nonsensical narratives and gossip during this past month. Here, we have something that is actually news, and is actually relevant, and they neglect to report it to their viewers.

Why INDIfferent??

March 28th, 2008

Conversations

Why indifferent?

Comrades,

I’m not trying to hate on our group name, but we should be cautious about how we throw the word indifferent around. We must remind ourselves of the definition of the word indifferent. A good definition from the dictionary is: without interest or concern; not caring; apathetic: his indifferent attitude toward the suffering of others.

This being said I sometimes question why we call ourselves “indifferent”, even though it sounds good. Are we indifferent toward the millions of people suffering from poverty in this country? Are we indifferent towards the police brutality and terror used on Philly’s black communities…hell no! Are we indifferent towards liars and criminals such as George Bush being elected to the presidency, No! We all care about these issues and want to make social change.

Across the Universe movie

Rush Hour 2 trailer

In fact it is the because of the huge amount of indifference in the world that huge injustices such as genocide and colonization are able to happen. Nazi Germany came to power and massacred millions because millions of other people were bystanders, they were indifferent, they did not speak up! – [The] Same with the genocide in the Congo, slavery in the US, etc. In fact, political activists have always battled against indifference and apathy, and worked to raise people’s consciousness. This is what our group is about.

I assume that our group is using the word in an artistic individual way by claiming that we are indifferent to all the bullshit, beauracracy and the current power structure that plagues our world and stifles art and creativity, and that we are creative, independent artists who want to do our own thing without getting affected by the restraints of the system, or something like that. Dre, let me know if that’s kinda what you mean with the word.

-Drew

Personally, I think its more of a don’t judge a book by its cover kind of situation. If someone sees our name, Indifferent, and automatically assumes oh these guys just don’t care about a damn thing…then they’re ignorant dumb ass shouldn’t even check out the site anyways. I’d tell ‘em not to, personally. We should be based on our CONTENT, which is what will happen regardless. Though, I do see what you’re saying. Even still, there’s no way someone will see the name and automatically assume these guys don’t care about this or that. That just sounds crazy.

Its up to the reader to make sense and make a definition out of whatever we’ve presented in front of them…From a social commentary, to a corny joke, to rave reviews for the new flavor of love chick with the big…uh, u see where I’m going. Bottom line is, we could post all kinds of things, but if someone sees our commentary on society’s ills, they maybe thinking…pssh, this shit is bullshit.

I agree with both parties. When people outside of our group see the name, they may jump to the wrong conclusion. There are many people out there hung up on the book definition of words. However, if they’ve got their panties and boxers that tied up in a knot, maybe they need not peruse our website. But then again…aren’t they the people we want to enlighten?? Why preach to the choir? But then again… if we have enough enlightened ones that take the risk and enter the depths of “Indifferent”, then they can help us spread the word. We’re all about lighting up the universe and being a catalyst for social change…right? So let ‘em assume…we can’t let their negative energy touch us!!!

New question people:  If you had the power to change any one aspect of society (I’m talking the world not just America) what would you change and why?

Personally, I’d do a 180 flip on the whole monetary system—maybe switch it to barter and trade. But after reading Plato’s Republic, I think that everyone’s basic necessities should be provided by the state, and that the concepts of private ownership of things like land and resources should be done away with. Instead of being profit driven, the world I envision would be driven by humanitarian motives.

A true meritocracy moved by theocracy replacing democracy and the tyranny of currency. In that kind of world, war would be a retarded way of settling differences (though that certainly is true even now), and hopefully few would find reasons to steal or defraud because no one would ever go hungry.

-Adrian

Mad-fucking late to the discussion but Drew, to espouse on your concern, when I was thinking of INDIfferent I was considering the collective representing a resounding negation of all that is wrong in our society in particular whether you choose to view it on a macro or micro level.  I felt that to be INDIfferent to the very forces that cause such injustice and hurt is very important.  Historically speaking, in my humble opinion, indifference has served to push people forward past points of refusal or discomfort.  Take for example what I would consider to be many black American slaves’ indifference to the dangers of learning to read or refusing to be held back from voting. This form of active indifference is the only indifference I considered when thinking about the moniker.

The Invasion video

The indifference that had to have been coursing through the veins of Martin Luther King or Malcolm X, both having received many death-threats and insults on their character.  The indifference expressed in every single social-revolution that only death silences. Whether we are speaking of the indifference towards colonization that made Haiti the first self-governing black nation in the western hemisphere or whether we are speaking of the indifference that the Viet-Cong fought with to outlast and out-perform the United States army in a war they should have been heavily defeated in.  Whichever instance, the active utilization of “not giving a fuck” about anything other than your idea or ideal is obtained and/or realized is the only indifference I favor or acknowledge.

The passive indifference in which I believe you are referring to is deplorable and disgusting.  It is inhumane not to feel, which is why I think the active use of indifference is so vital.  It takes decided action, drive, vision, and a principled uncompromising will to not waiver, “fuck that!” in the face of all that is going on in the world. To take a righteous stance and act and live accordingly as people on this earth is truly acting “INDIfferent” to the culture of excuses and lies, political spin, capitalist-non-human interests, and ethnic abuse and genocide hiding under the guise of “development” we find ourselves living in today.

Lauren London…

Afro Samurai: Resurrection movie download

img105/9813/15019053melodyrcr102120ph9.jpg

So, I recently revisited this thought (I could explain how, but you’d figure me more crazy than already noticed—if noticed…uh anyways) that I could seriously, honestly, to put it in slang of our days, “woo” Lauren London.

I’m a sucker for dimples and she is ridiculously cute. I’m not the kind of person to ever get star struck, or really overly excited about anything other than acing a test or something. But, I hadn’t thought about Ms. London in a minute, then stumbled across a picture of Sharon Leal (another gorgeous light-skinned beauty) that had my girl Lauren in it too. Her look is so approachable, well to me it is. Not trying to say I’m Mr. Ice-Cold, but I don’t think I’d freeze up when faced by such beauty.

Anyways, my point is, this is what I’m going to make an attainable goal and a goal of writing and my career and anything else I do….meeting Lauren London, casually flirting to throw the idea in her head, then letting the personality shine through.

Now, I know I know, you’re probably thinking HA! That girl is off the chains, who are YOU to have a chance…well, see that’s the thing, I’m ME!! (just kidding). But really, she seems so real and down-to-earth. By the way, I’ll have you know that I’m saying this without ever seeing any real long interview or footage of her in casual moments. I don’t google pics or interviews or sightings of her…that’ll just be weird (yes, weirder than writing to her in a piece that I disguise as why “woo-ing” her is an attainable goal..shutup). But, really I’m too absent-minded (ask my editors) to even remember to jump online and see what’s the latest with her. This will probably hinder my chances of meeting her, but don’t worry, its destiny. I’ll post the interview with her and maybe the texts and emails we’ll probably continually send back and forth….

So, here’s reasons why it’s a possibility:

1.like I said, she’s cool as shit and down to earth, which I have NO proof of. I believe in my ability to read people and she’s got the illest smile on the planet, soooo yeah…just shutup and agree

Stormy Weather dvdrip

2. She’s a neo-soul, hip-hop fan who likes to go to concerts. This means that maybe she may have that hip hop elitist and excellence in taste as I would. We’re not gangsta rap bangers, nor southern hip-hop crunk in the club type people, but we both understand that the genre DOES have its place in hip-hop.

3.She’s cute…seriously. Look at the dimples.

4. She was on Entourage, with Turtle. Now, if Turtle doesn’t instantly boost MY own chances in talking her up, then you can refrain from ever reading anything I type….no, don’t do that, you know you need these updates!

5. The writing right here that’s being written! Seeing as how she’s down-to-earth (remember, no proof, but yeah), and a cool-ass neosoul/hip-hop fan, then my writing is right up her alley:

Conscious-intelligence in the form of subtle sarcasm, a humorous demeanor plus a touch of British sensibility with Tanzanian tendencies.

The Portrayal of Blacks in Media

Part I: Sambos, Mammies, Television and Movies

by Brandon Tyler

In the early 1800s, minstrel shows were used as a backlash against abolitionism

.  In the twentieth century, both during and after Jim Crow, Black people were portrayed as docile servants in movies television and advertising.  It has since remained that Black men have been constantly shown as lazy and idiotic. The Black woman has received a number of unflattering images in American culture such as the mammy and the jezebel.

The minstrel show genre emerged in the early 19th century when abolitionists were gaining traction.  The purpose of the minstrel was to present Black people as happy and content.  There were many problems with this idea, the foremost of which being that the actors weren’t even Black.  Instead, they were white men in “blackface.”  There were two main types of characters played by these blackfaced actors: the Sambo and the Urban dandy[2].  The Sambo was childlike, silly, and stupid, but he was content with this because he had his master.  The urban dandy represented the free black man trying to gain upward mobility.  He was portrayed as uppity and was mocked by the other characters in the minstrel[3] Bustin Down the Door hd

Even after the age of minstrel shows was over, Black people were still presented as servants and people were who were content with being ignorant.  Among the early television shows was Amos and Andy.  This is a perfect example of the continuation of the minstrel show formula.  They were childlike and ignorant, just like the sambo character in the minstrel. The character of Mammy, played by Hattie McDaniels, in “Gone With the Wind” is another example.  The mammy stereotype in show business came to consist of a heavyset Black woman who is completely asexual; she has no purpose aside from serving white people.

Perhaps the largest market for servant stereotypes is and has been advertising.  Aunt Jemima, another mammy character, is the first example to come to mind.  This fictional Black woman has been used for years to sell pancakes and syrup.  The Aunt Jemima we see today is toned-down version of the original. The first actual woman to play the character of Aunt Jemima was a formerly enslaved woman named Nancy Green in 1893[4] Cadet Kelly full movie

. Singer, Edith Wilson played Jemima from 1948 to 1966[6]. Although the ads aren’t as blatantly offensive anymore, the name and face of Aunt Jemima are still used.  Uncle Ben’s rice has also used a fictional, stereotypical Black person to sell its product, and still does.  Cream of Wheat features a Black man smiling from ear-to-ear with a chef’s hat.

This type of propaganda meant to keep Black people enslaved is similar to many television shows and films today which feature actual Black actors hired by white-owned companies.  In 2000, Spike Lee made a film called Bamboozled which was a satire of this sad state of entertainment.  The film was tackling the issue of stereotypes in today’s entertainment and it educated the viewer, simultaneously, about the minstrel shows of the past.  Despite a star-studded cast featuring Damon Wayans, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Tommy Davidson, Savion Glover, Mos Def and Michael Rappaport, the film went relatively unnoticed.  In my personal experience, I have found that there are two types of people when it comes to this film:  those (like me) who love it, and those who hate it.  Nine times out of ten, the person who hates the film doesn’t get its satirical nature and thus finds the film either boring or offensive. The idea of using “black actors with blacker faces” satirizes the willingness of Black entertainers today to portray themselves in the same coon-like manner although they do not necessarily have to do so in order to get work.  Mr. Dunwitty, played by Michael Rappaport, is one of the most intriguing characters because he is the white television executive that claims to know more about the Black experience than actual Black people.  This is symbolic of the people running Black entertainment today.  Sure, the nationwide trends are mostly set by Black people in American cities.  However, folks like Dunwitty are the ones determining what sells.  Pierre Delacroix, played by Damon Wayans is the Black television writer who has become somewhat disconnected with his Blackness and usually goes along with whatever nonsensical ideas that his boss, Mr. Dunwitty, wants to pursue.  Delacroix internally has not forgotten who he is and after having enough of Dunwitty’s antics, he takes a drastic step.  He and his other Black co-worker, Sloan Hopkins (played by Jada Pinkett-Smith), set out to make a show so overtly offensive that it would get him fired and perhaps get the point across about the offensiveness of television stereotypes.  However, doing this “New Millennium Minstrel Show” backfires in serious ways (I won’t tell you how, I’ll just recommend the film to you)

A group that has suffered serious degradation in American popular culture is Black women.  Mammy and Aunt Jemima provide examples of one side of the black female stereotype.  The other major stereotype concerning the Black woman is the jezebel or the venus.  This stereotype has taken over as the dominant image of Black women in American pop culture.  Through this image, Black woman are looked upon as exotic sex objects.  Furthermore, they are portrayed as sexually deviant and therefore incapable of being raped[7].  This was the rationale used by enslavers to justify their rape of African women.

Today, we are completely desensitized to female entertainers of color on our television sets wearing next to nothing.  Also, it is worth noting that actress Halle Berry didn’t win an academy award until she did a naked sex scene with a white actor.  She is the only Black woman to win the Best Actress Academy Award to date.  Another image of Black woman that is emerging is that of the aggressive, dangerous and manlike Black woman.  The book “White on Black” shows an example in the 80s of Grace Jones in a European car ad where she is larger than the car and saying things like, “I demand prestige, I demand power.[8]”  Today in the U.S., that image of the Black woman is on the rise.  In Donald Trump’s reality show entitled, The Apprentice, a Black woman by the name of Omarosa was made into a villain for her shrewd businesswoman attitude.  The point of the show is to see which of the contestants is a good enough businessperson to be hired by Donald Trump.  Omarosa is manipulative and cut-throat, but isn’t that what corporate America is all about?  As a Black person and a woman, she is a member of two groups in the United States historically expected to be accommodating, docile servants.  This “Omarosa Syndrome[9]

Bonnie and Clyde film

comes from the racism/sexism double-whammy that is affecting sistas all across this country.  Speaking of reality television, have you noticed that almost every black man on reality TV is made to look like a loose cannon?  Anyway, I will tackle the issue of the Buck stereotype in part II of this commentary which will deal with the music industry.

In closing, the failure to heed Spike Lee’s warning in 2000 has led to an even worse state of media and entertainment today.  There are more Black stereotypes in movies and TV, arguably, than ever. The struggle of the early Black actors is well known.  There was a certain time when there were no dignified roles available to Blacks in the field of acting.  Today, there are still barriers to dignified roles for Black people.  However, today’s opportunities are immensely larger in number.  Modern films like Soul Plane, which portray Black people as over-sexed, lazy, rude, pot-smoking ignoramuses, have no excuse to exist. Nowadays, it seems as if the souls of Black folks are up for sale in the entertainment industry if the price is right.
